VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM. Victory alighting facing, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; eight-rayed stars flanking; in exergue, COMOB. COI 13b; MIB 11. AV. 1.48 g. 13.5 mm. R. Rare and in excellent condition for issue, brilliant and superb. Good EF.

Lot # 698 - Ostrogothic Italy. Theodahad (534-536). AE 40 Nummi-Follis, Rome mint. Obv. DN THEOD-[ΛHΛTVS] REX. Helmeted and mantled bust right. Rev. VICTORIA PRINCIPVM SC. Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm frond. COI 89b; MIB 81; MEC 1, 141; Ladich, Teodato 24. AE. 9.27 g. 26 mm. RR. Very rare and fascinating issue. Brown patina. Rough surfaces. About VF. While Theoderic carefully upheld a display of respect toward Constantinople in his coinage, Theodahad took a bold step by featuring his own portrait. As noted by Grierson (p. 11), these folles stand out as some of the most remarkable coins struck by any Germanic ruler of the fifth or sixth centuries.

Pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust right, wearing imperial mantle. Rev. DN/ BADV/ ANA/ RIX in four lines within wreath. Cf. MEC 1, 156 var. (legend on reverse); Cf. COI 70 var. (same); Cf. Ladich 10-11 and 14-15 var. (same). AR. 0.55 g. 12 mm. RRR. Apparently unlisted variety in the legend on reverse (BADVANA). Extremely rare blundered type. Good VF.

Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. VICTOR[IA AVG]VSTORVM. Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; to right, star; in exergue, CONOB. Cf. D.O. 19; Cf. Sear 145; Cf. Arslan 2 (for type); cf. BMC Vandals 1 (same); Cf. MEC 1, 298. AV. 1.49 g. 16.5 mm. RR. Very rare imitative issue. About EF.

Diademed and cuirassed bust right, wearing imperial mantle. Rev. Christogram on globe between two stars; all within wreath. Cf. D.O. 339/1 var; Cf. Ranieri 361 var; Picozzi 22 (this coin). AR. 0.77 g. 13 mm. RR. Blundered style. Very rare and choice. Nicely toned, with light iridescent hues and minor earthy deposits. EF. Ex Artemide XLIV, 2015, 311.

Lot # 703 - Lombardic Italy. Aistulf (749-756). AE Follis, Ravenna mint. Obv. [- - -] FVS R [- - -]. Crowned bust facing, dressing paludamentum, holding globus cruciger. Rev. M between [A/N/N/O] and I. Above, cross. Below, [R]AV. Ranieri 847-9; MEC 1, 324. AE. 1.43 g. 14 mm. RRR. Extremely rare. Good condition for issue. Pleasant green patina. VF. Aistulfus, king of the Longobards, conquered Ravenna in the spring or summer of 751. He brought a revolutionary innovation in numismatics, issuing coins minted in Ravenna that, unique in their kind in the Longobard series in northern Italy, completely borrow the bizantine model and no longer only as an archetype of inspiration. In Ravenna, Aistulfus minted coins in three denominals; solidus, tremissis and follis, in a period of time presumably from 751 to 755. Very few specimens have come down to us of these coins, altogether less than twenty, of all types and metals. Cfr. Gennari-Rossini 2018.

MEC 1, 307-310; BMC Vandals p. 131 and pl. XVIII, 30-31; Arslan -. AV. 1.49 g. 16.5 mm. RR. Very rare and superb example, with pleasant light tone. Minor marks on obverse, otherwise. good EF.

Slighty chipped edge. An apparently unpublished variant due to the decorations on the obverse and the arrangement of the letters of the monetary magistrate on the reverse. About EF.
